Weather forecasters across the country were filled with dread long before Hurricane Ida made landfall. Once the storm started to churn up the Gulf of Mexico’s unusually warm water, things escalated fast. The hurricane underwent what is called rapid intensification, and it grew from a Category 1 to a Category 4 storm before it hit the coastline. So far, Ida has caused 4 deaths, but officials have indicated that the death toll will likely rise.
